DLR Glasthule Opera Festival

The first opera festival to take place in Dun Laoghaire (in association with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLR) comes to the Pavilion Theatre this June.

THE FESTIVAL WILL BE LAUNCHED AT A GALA RECEPTION ON THURSDAY, 4TH JUNE FROM 6pm BY RYAN TUBRIDY

La Bohème begins the festival on June 23rd at 8pm with further performances on June 25th and 27th. Considered to be Puccini’s best-loved opera it tells a story love, passion, heartache and loss in the Latin quarter of Paris, made all the more poignant by the sheer beauty of Puccini’s music. This full production, with orchestra is conducted by Roy Holmes and directed by John McKeown.

On June 24th and 26th performances continue with an operatic double bill In English
Riders to the Sea by Vaughan Williams with the Irish premiere of The Wandering Scholar by Gustav Holst, Conducted by David Brophy, directed by Ian Walsh.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of John Millington Synge, writer and resident of Dun Laoghaire for part of his life, Glasthule Opera proudly presents Riders to the Sea – the opera - closely based on Synge’s powerful play. Two more Irish singers return from singing abroad. Doreen Curran and Sarah Power sing the main roles of Maurya and Cathleen with Limerick soprano Sarah Dolan as Nora and Roland Davit as Bartley.

Staying with Irish writers, the contrasting short opera The Wandering Scholar is based on an episode in the stories of the County Down writer, Helen Waddell. It tells the story of a young wife who entertains the local priest when her husband is out. A wandering student call to the door and…!

Sarah Power plays Alison with John Molloy as Father Philippe, Ross Scanlon as Pierre and Roland Davit as Louis.

DLR Glasthule Opera Festival celebrates Bloomsday on June 16th at 8pm

Remembering the Tenors of Ireland
A tribute to John McCormack, James Joyce, Dermot Troy and Frank Patterson with Emmanuel Lawler (tenor) and Padhraic o’Cuinneagain on piano featuring favourite songs made famous by our bygone tenors: Danny Boy, Roses of Picardy, Just a Song at Twilight, etc. Why not dress up for Bloomsday and join in the spirit of the celebrations in the area.
