"Dia de los Muertos" Celebration Honors Fallen Soldiers
El Paso, TX. The El Paso Museum of History continues the 2008 Dia de los Muertos Celebration: "A Celebration of Life" with special altars from the community. The event has been made possible through a generous donation from Alltel Wireless.
The Museum of History will display altars for multiple community organizations, including a special altar hosted by Ft. Bliss with a tribute to Fallen Soldiers. The altar will be on display at the Museum of History November 1st December 2nd.
The altar in the Dia de los Muertos tradition is an opportunity to celebrate the life and memory of a loved one passed, said Dawn Thurmond, Cultural Programs Specialist for the Museum. It is said the legacy of the person lives on through all who view the altar."
Last year, the event hosted a special altar for fallen heroes from the El Paso Police and Fire Department. This will be the first time Ft. Bliss has participated in the cultural event.
We are very pleased to have the opportunity to honor our fallen soldiers in this way. Having a role in a tradition that is a huge part of our community further strengthens the bonds between us, said Bill Ketcherside, Chief, Special Events, Ft. Bliss, Family, Morale Welfare and Recreation.
Other altars will include a month long exhibit of the winner of the Ysleta Independent School District Altar competition.
We are excited about the exhibition opportunity that the Museum of History is offering to our YISD winner from our Dia de los Muertos exhibition, said Melissa Barba-Espinosa, Gallery Curator & Educational Specialist Ysleta Independent School District. Our teachers and students work very hard every year to create these altars to celebrate the rich, colorful Mexican heritage of this beautiful Border region. It is an honor to collaborate with our community in celebrating the traditions and celebrations of our Mexican-American community.
In addition, non-profits from around the community have been invited to host an altar at the Museum at the Dia de los Muertos celebration on November 1st. Those altars will be up for the day and will pay tribute to individuals that represent the non-profits and/or their missions.
