Description
Whiteoak Canyon "It's hard to keep track of all the falls at Whiteoak Canyon. There are six sequentially numbered falls, starting from the Blue Ridge and ending down at the base of the canyon. Whether or not you correctly number the falls, take this classic Shenandoah hike, for there are not only falls but also canyon views and everywhere-you-look beauty. " Day & Overnight Hikes in Shenandoah National Park Guide Book . The falls should be frozen so let's check them out! Take note we are not ice climbing but only hiking on the trail that takes us around the falls. This is a moderate hike. For information about how to dress etc. for winter hiking please refer to our "about us" pages and pay particularly close attention to the section on base layers and avoiding cotton!!! Showing up without appropriate footware, water, and winter clothing will result in you being sent away. I realize this sounds harsh but hypothermia is a real danger and I do not want any of us to get injured or ill so proper precautions must be taken. If you have further questions after reading the ENTIRE link listed above...please e-mail or call me and I will be happy to answer any of your questions. I am here to help:) Trail Information Activity Type: Hiking Nearby City: Madison Length: 5.6 total miles Trail Type: Out-and-Back Skill Level: Easy to moderate Duration: 4-5 hours Season: Year-round Trailhead Elev: 1000 feet Top Elev: 2900 feet Local Contacts: Shenandoah National Park Weather Information We hike rain, snow, or shine. Click here to see the forecast for where we will be hiking. Meetup in Sperryville, VA to ride (about 15 minutes) to the trailhead is at 10:00AM Carpool meetup time from Dorsey is 8:00AM Carpool Information I strongly advise carpooling for more reasons that I will take space to list but if the gas prices are not enough to convince you then maybe the lack of parking will:) Mike Harris (405-714-3162) will meet you at Dorsey Station at 8:00AM. Click here for directions to Dorsey Station. Directions to Trailhead Click here for directions to where we meet near the trailhead. It ishighly recommend that you carpool to guarantee you don't miss us in case you are late arriving to the trailhead. Please remember we are a beginning level hiking group and our pace is slower than most of the other groups out there. We take breaks as necessary although we do not stroll. We get the heart rate up and stop for people to catch up as needed. We have at least one guide in the front (varies according to how many hikers RSVP "YES") in addition to a "sweeper" or two in the back, which means that no hiker is ever left behind. If you get upset because someone has to rest at the top of a hill etc. then you might want to find another group. We are very supportive and encouraging with no pressure on speed. Our focus is to have a good time and get or stay fit. Fido is welcome on this Hike! Let's have good times and see you on the trail:) Kellie C. - kelliecar@aol.com
