Prokofiev's lively Classical Symphony is not a pastiche, but hwo the composer felt that Haydn would have written a symphony had he been alive at the time. Tchaikovsky's piano concerto set the pattern for many future pieces with its dramatic confrontation between heroic soloist and eloquent orchestra. The piece has an expensive first movement, ezquisite slow movement interrupted by a glittering scherzo, and a lastmovement which builds to a grand final melody. Seventy-five years after the memorable occasionupon which it gave the first performance of Shotakovich's Fifth Symphony, the orchestra remains unsurpassed in this highly emotional work.
