Friday, October 24th, 2003 was a big night. In a freezing, graffiti-scarred old factory called Electrowerkz in Islington, north London, Bloc Party showed what disco-punk sounds like if you take away the cowbells and irony, and replace them with ferocity and tension. In doing so, they proved they belong on a larger stage. Kele Okereke and guitarist Russell Lissack knew each other through mutual friends in Essex where Kele went to school and Russell lived. They met again at the Reading Festival in 1999 and resolved to start a band together. They wrote together in bedrooms. For months. And months. Slowly, methodically, they got better.
