Bear Swamp Reservation Discovery Hike at Mass Audubons Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary

Cost: Adults $10.00m/ $15.00nm
Explore the rocky woodlands and extensive glacial wetland ecosystem along a moderate 3-mile hike at Bear Swamp Reservation in Ashfield. Here the dense forest shelters ample remnants of both natural and human history waiting to be rediscovered. Prominent stone walls built 200 years ago by farmers to mark their fields bisect the property and offer fascinating reminders of dramatic changes in the land. Located on a 1,500-foot ridge of metamorphic rock, Bear Swamp offers an amazing diversity of flora and fauna within an exceptional range of topography that was sculpted by the last ice age. A definite highlight is the Lookout Trail which, in early spring, affords a wonderful view of the beaver pond directly below the craggy ledge. This is an ideal program for nature lovers seeking something off the beaten track. Registration is required. Call (413) 584-3009 for details.
