This was one of our premier events in 2009 so, yes, we are doing it again! We will be rafting with Cantrell Ultimate Rafting. The price will be $144.52. This includes a full day of rafting down the gorgeous Lower New River Gorge, all 3 meals on Saturday (including lunch on the river), and two-nights base lodging of platform tent camping (there are lodging upgrades), plus a taxes and a state government fee. Cantrell is also offering us a special price on the Amish Cabins (not the rustic bungalows from last year) for $10/person/night for those who don't want to camp. See the lodging section below for other options with Cantrell. The total cost to include rafting, lodging, taxes and fees is $144.52. Other costs include gasoline and meals on Friday and Sunday. The River - from Cantrell web site During the summer the Lower New River is perfect for first and second time rafters - with plenty of whitewater challenges to thrill even seasoned veterans. # Perfect trip for beginners and seasoned veterans # Experience Class II-V rapids in Cantrell's standard 6/7 person raft # Enjoy 16 miles/ 4-6 hours on the New River wave train # Experience a plunge off Jump Rock (optional), and swimmer rapids Last year's water level had the rapids at mostly 3-4+'s - an awesome run! Rafting Cantrell has been in business for more than 30 years, and is one of the last independent outfitters running the New and Gauley rivers. Cantrell uses the 6-person rafts (plus guide) - these are lighter and more mobile rafts than other outfitters use. Cantrell's guides have long-term experience - some with more than 20 years running the New and Gauley. They are an excellent crew. Lodging If you were with us last year, there are new (and improved) lodging options over tent camping and "rustic bungalows". Cantrell took over the old Rivermen site (now called the "Fayetteville Base Camp") comprising about 100 acres, with camp sites, cottages and cabins (including the Amish cabins mentioned above), and even some deluxe housing options (including hot tubs!). Check this link for options and pricing. Cantrell will let us modify our lodging selections subject to availability right until we get there. Carpooling Carpooling will be encouraged, but it not necessary. We will work out those details later. Schedule We will arrive on Friday evening. Erin is putting together a barbeque - be sure to RSVP for that! Early wake-up on Saturday, with a hot, hearty breakfast included. Then rafting all day, with a midday lunch break. We will be off the river by 4, and back to base camp - with dinner and drinks in the lodge (dinner provided, drinks not). We are on our own on Sunday morning, with checkout by 11 AM. There are some good breakfast places in Fayetteville, and the option for some local hiking. There are plenty of other activities you are welcome to explore on Sunday before returning home.
