Ireland is lucky to have some of the best wind resources in the world. The biggest hurdle in advancing our wind energy portfolio is its intermittency. The Spirit of Ireland proposal aims to make use of Ireland's natural resources to combat our rising CO2 emissions and the impending energy crisis.
Their plan is to build pumped hydro storage facilities to store wind energy when wind farms are producing a surplus and release this energy at times of low wind. By building dams across the face of valleys near the sea, Spirit of Ireland proposes making use of a unique opportunity to make natural reservoirs for a pumped storage station. This will reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels, cut down on our emissions and make Ireland a world leader in green energy production. This will in fact become the first large scale power plant producing green carbon free energy on demand 24-7 in the world.
