‘The Ernest Hemingway I Knew’ - Valerie Hemingway

Valerie Hemingway is a writer, editor and speaker currently living in Montana, USA but originally from Dublin. Valerie first encountered and interviewed Ernest Hemingway in Spain in 1959, the interview was awkward and brief, but before it ended something had clicked into place.

For the next two years, she devoted her life to Hemingway and his wife, Mary, travelling with them through beloved old haunts in Spain and France and living with them during the tumultuous final months in Cuba.

In name a personal secretary, but in reality a confidante and sharer of the great man’s secrets and sorrows, Valerie literally came of age in the company of one of the greatest literary lions of the twentieth century.

After Hemingway’s death, she catalogued the Hemingway papers for presentation to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston and later married Hemingway’s son, Dr. Gregory Hemingway. In her talk she will reflect on her intriguing personal and global journey.
