DETROIT – On National Bike to School Day (5/9/12), YaPeoples @ Project: A.R.T., ¬¬-in collaboration with the ¬Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, Detroit Bike City, U.N.I.T.Y., First Line Defense, the Coleman A. Young Foundation, Holla! Connections, Detroit Public Schools and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), ANNOUNCED their plans to host a Bike to SUMMER School Rally on Saturday, July 14th, 2012.
Detroit Public Schools alone will serve as many as 30,000 students this summer providing 6 hours of summer school daily for six weeks. Students in grades 9 – 12 will be offered opportunities to make up core academic courses in which they were not successful.
Detroit’s Transportation Department, the newly, privately-owned management company in charge of Detroit’s bus system, is in crisis according to 2011 report summarized by the Huffington Post:
• 50% of the buses do not arrive on time
• 20-30% do not show up at all
• Many buses fail to stop because they are already over capacity
• The elimination of bus routes are forcing riders to ride twice as long
HOWEVER, in 2009, Detroit Department of Transportation instituted the Bikes on Buses Program equipping all buses with bike racks. To utilize the DDOT Bus Racks you must be 15 years old and no additional fee is required.
