108th and 109th Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows
March 3 & 4, 2012 at Detroit’s Cobo Center

Benched format offers unique opportunity to learn from breeders, owners and handlers.

The Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows return to Cobo Center to entertain and educate dog lovers from all over the Midwest. The two-day celebration of dogs allows visitors up-close and personal time with breeders, owners, handlers and over 2,500 dogs in more than 167 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club. Watch dogs work, compete and perform in the special events that run all day long, and talk to their breeders and owners to explore the special talents of their particular breed of dog. No other show in the United States brings as many canine events, vendors and demonstrations under one roof.

The DKC Dog Shows are one of only five ‘benched’ American Kennel Club (AKC) shows left in the United States. The benched format offers visitors the unique opportunity to meet with owners and breeders and learn about breed characteristics, temperament, care, health, grooming, history and other issues for dog owners. When dogs are not in the judging rings, they are displayed on a bench according to breed, making it easy for a spectator to talk to several breeders of a specific dog in the same location. Dogs are benched from 9AM to 5PM on Saturday and Sunday from 9AM to 4PM.

For groups, the Map of the Stars program is designed as a self-guided educational tour of the show. Perfect for youngsters, seniors or any organizations with an interest in dogs, the program provides opportunities to learn directly from those who work with the animals and to enjoy the canine sports of Conformation, Obedience, Junior Showmanship, and Rally. Scout groups that complete the Map of the Stars tour even earn their K-9 Care Badges.
