APPLAUSE SERIES SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

LOCOMOTION

Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences on Tour

GRADES 4-9 • CAPACITY 2,000
CIVIC CENTER MAIN HALL

Performance length: 60 minutes

Lonnie Collins Motion has so much kinetic energy that his nickname, Locomotion, is perfect. He's seen a lot of sadness in his young life. But when he discovers a passion for writing poetry, Lonnie finally finds a way to express his feelings about his family, the fire that took his parents away, his little sister, and his world. Award-winning novelist Jacqueline Woodson has turned her Coretta Scott King Honor Book into an inspiring play about the journey of an eleven-year-old African American boy as he moves from tragedy to hope, from silence to expression, and from losing one family to gaining a new one. Along with Lonnie, we all learn that something as simple as writing a poem can start a journey of growing up, through the discovery of a warm, funny, perceptive, and unique voice.

Theater tours available following this performance. Advance registration required.

BONUS: Be one of the first 100 classrooms to order tickets to LOCOMOTION to receive a complimentary copy of the book! This unique poetry-based book is a great resource for literacy and character studies.

Beyond the Performance:
Writing and Performance Workshops

Using LOCOMOTION as a springboard, teaching artist Yvette Zarod Hermann will lead students as they write their own autobiographical poems and use drama and writing to explore character development. Experience occurs at your school. Three options are available:

1) Pre-Performance Workshop: Teaching Artist introduces the concept of blending autobiography and poetry, performs selections from LOCOMOTION, and guides students to write first drafts of autobiographical poems. $20 per participating classroom.

2) Post-Performance Workshop: Students are led through a short critical response to the performance. Teaching Artist introduces the concept of character development through writing. Using a series of guided exercises, students work in small groups to name, describe and invent a personal history of a fictional character. $20 per participating classroom.

3) Both: For a deeper learning experience, the two workshops described above may be offered in conjunction with one another. $40 per participating classroom.

To request, contact Michelle at 515-246-2355 or mmcdonald@civiccenter.org.
