UMconscious (the UM) is a very well-respected, live hip-hop, jazzy, funky fusion band that blends original beats with poetics and melodic tribal-backed grooves, and is comprised of Johnny L (bass/vocals), Boogie B (guitar/vocals), Sibs (drums), and DJ Lush (turntables). Additionally, the UM frequently features Ashleigh Cope, Abi Wilson, and Amanda Tully, who captivate audiences with their wonderful live, on-stage paintings.
Shortly after releasing “The Avenue,” the UM’s first full-length LP, in 2008, the band won Westword Magazine’s “Best Hip-Hop Band inColorado” title. Formed in 2005, the UM had created a debut album that was described as “deliciously coherent and technical.” Having rocked many premier events in Colorado, the UM was then chosen by Burton Snowboards to play the 2009 Transworld Snowboarding video premier, and was featured as the main act at the 2009 Sol Vista National mountain biking championship.
Several national acts with whom the UM has shared the stage include Arrested Development, B-Side Players, Flobots, Living Legends, Lyrics Born, Pepper, Pharcyde, and Wu-Tang Clan. The band also toured with Guru’s Jazzmatazz and played the 2012 Sonic Bloom Pre-Party, hosted by world-renowned artists Alex & Allyson Grey.
Currently, the UM is in the studio wrapping up the recording, mixing, and mastering of its full-length, follow-up album to “The Avenue,” which is due to be released at a long-awaited show taking place at the Bluebird Theater in Denver, CO on August 24, 2012. All in all, this is a very exciting time for the UM; the band is extremely energized to begin promoting its soon-to-be-released second album and again tour throughout/beyondColorado.
