Description:
BMC 301: George De Martino: I Do Solemnly Swear: On the Need for Professional Economic Ethics The economics profession today has enormous effect on the world about us. Leading economists who populate central banks, government agencies, multilateral development banks, credit rating agencies, consulting firms and myriad other private sector firms engage in activities that affect (sometimes decisively) the life chances facing people in the developed and especially in the developing world. Indeed, economists sometimes engage in social engineering. Yet, the economics profession has no body of professional ethics; no texts, no journals, no curriculum or training in the ethical challenges that they face in their professional work. This talk will build a case for professional economic ethics, and explore what might be some of its chief principles.
