John Edwards is appealing to not just the base of the Democratic Party, but to Independents and Republicans. In many polls, he is the only Democrat that beats every Republican. He is also viewed as the most moderate Democrat, though he is most certainly the most liberal.
Idaho is home to a lot of independent thinkers who would vote for John Edwards because he is the best candidate.
