EQUALITY FLORIDA IS YOU I am stunned that with such a strong vote for change for the highest office...the Anti-Gay “Marriage Protection Act” passed. I suppose I should not be surprised. Even our "best and brightest" demonstrated a revolting level of apathy. Democracy does not work unless the people participate. Now the greatest document of the State of Florida makes it legal to discriminate against the Gay community. This year marked the highest minority voter turnout. I am baffled how any voter could support our first, self described black President, while simultaneously voting to discriminate against another sub-group. I think the best thing we can take from this election is that, action equals change. Our local Volunteers, GLBT population and even some of our university GSA’s chose to do little or nothing to work on the NO on 2 Campaign. It is proven that call banks and door to door canvasses work. It was those very activities, this grass roots work, that elected our new President. We missed a great opportunity to educate these voters. We missed an opportunity to protect the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered community from government sanctioned discrimination. Instead so many sat back and hoped someone else would do the work for them. I suppose the best lesson we can take from this is to respond to the call for action when our rights are being violated. Florida and Mississippi are the only states that do not allow gay couples to adopt. You can be fired from your job for being gay here in the sunshine state. You can be denied housing or evicted in most counties including Volusia for being gay. Equality Florida will continue to fight. But Equality Florida is YOU!
