Come along on our second moto-camping trip. Our destination is Van Damme State Park http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=433 off Hiway 1 just 3 miles south of the great little town of Mendocino http://www.mendocino.com/ Tbis is one of the last chances to enjoy the best of the West before the vacation season starts, so if you like uncrowded camping at the best spots, plan on making the trip. After march, the good spots get reserved and crowded, peakung in June and July. Here is our route - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=2033+San+Pablo+Avenue,+Berkeley,+CA+94702-1613+(Lanesplitter+Pizza+Pub+Berkeley)&daddr=38.136717,-122.868347+to:Van+Damme+State+Park,+Mendocino,+CA+95460&hl=en&geocode=FRfUQQIdpPq1-CH0n29FKVSueSnX8uvXwX6FgDEbiU5pvXhK6g%3B%3BFYhAVwId9oef-CFJ16UGJVzb2Q&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1&sll=38.026459,-122.520905&sspn=0.486799,1.349945&ie=UTF8&ll=39.088502,-123.41629&spn=0.47966,1.349945&z=10 We will leave around 8:00 on saturday from a meeting spot at LaneSplitters in Oakland, and then another meeting spot in or near Marin for those in the city that will come. This takes us on some of the best motorcycling roads in the country. Great views and fun riding all the way. We can have lunch around Sea Ranch. We should arrive at Van Damme around 2 which gives us time to explore, hike, enjoy camp, etc.. To add a bit of adventure to the trip, we cannot make reservations at this time of year, and there are only 22 sites open on a first come basis. If the campground is full, there are a couple others for backup within 15 miles. There is gas and a general store in Mendocino. Our next meeting on 3/11 will also be a pre-trip planning session. If you think you might go on the trip, please plan to attend the meeting. If not, try to come anyway and meet the others. For the meeting, bring a list of any gear you can share or would like/need to borrow. Aside from that, each person will be responsible for having thier own camping gear and bike road kit (tools, flat repair, etc.). If you're wondering what essentials to bring, let me know and I can send out my version of a must have list. As far as meals go, plan to bring your own but feel free to team up with others for meais. For those of you with working stoves and pans, let me know if you mind sharing your stove to another for heating meals, etc.. For those that want to go, please email me your cell phone number so that I may make a list to hand out, for contacting each other on the trip, esp. when we might get lost of lose the group. After the meeting, once we know who will go, I will send out via email that night a list of meeting spots for departure, since we are spread out the Bay Area. I'll also bring sheets for locations and directions for stops, spaced about 80-90 miles or less apart. Some of us max out near that range, and others like me just like to be able to get off the bike, bathroom break, snack, etc.. There's not a lot of gas stops along the way so we'll plan our breaks around them Camp site fees are $35 but I have a discount pass good for one site, and can be shared by at least 3-4 persons per site, or more. But they do charge an extra $10 per extra vehicle (over one or two bikes). If it looks like serious rain, some or all of us may drop out, but we should have a good idea by Thursday night. If it will be wet, of course bring appropriate gear for the road and camp. Firewood might be available - I will check on that. Plan to have cash (some small bills is nice) for splitting site fees, etc. If there are more than 3 of us, we should have lead and tail riders, so also let me know if you can volunteer to be the lead or tail rider. We can switch off often, between stops. All you need is to be able to read and follow directions.... to lead us to the next stop, or take up the back of the pack, keeping track of any riders that may have to pull over and also get to the next stop. Please RSVP for the trip - and/or email or call me anytime @ [masked] Thanks and hope to see and meet you soon. Scott
