The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, plastic pollution and a 7,000-mile research expedition will be in focus on Saturday, Feb. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Ocean Institute. The Ocean Institute will host the 72-foot sailing research vessel Sea Dragon and a lecture and book signing on the Plastic Ocean, presented by Captain Charles Moore, author and founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF). Sea Dragon tours will be held from both days, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Moore’s lecture and book signing will be presented Saturday, Feb. 18, 3:30 p.m. in the Samueli Conference Center. Moore is considered the ‘father of Pacific gyres research,’ which gathers information on a vast vortex of ocean currents where plastic debris accumulates.
