500X Gallery is Texas' oldest artist run cooperative gallery. Established in 1978, it provides one of the best exhibition spaces to up and coming artists in the city of Dallas. The gallery has over 3,000 square feet of exhibition space. The plan for 500X Gallery was developed by two artists: Will Hipps, a Massachusetts native who moved to Dallas to teach, and Richard Childers, a local painter. Their goal was to provide a space for artists to exhibit free of outside influences and dealer restrictions.
Over the past 25 years, the plan has suceeded, giving artists the chance to show their work to the public. Many have gone to become prominent artists in the area and elsewhere, including Vincent Falsetta, Otis Jones, Nic Nicosia, Tom Orr, James Surls, Frank X. Tolbert, and many others. 500X gallery exhibits work by the current board members as well as solo or group shows by artists outside of the gallery. Every year, the gallery exhibit a juried show hand picked by an individual from the local arts community. The gallery also feature an unjuried "Open Show" for any artist wanting to exhibit their work for a small fee.
Also open weekdays by appointment. The gallery will be closed during the summer (June-August).
