Description
Reception for the artist: December 5, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

David H. Gibson visited Wimberley, Texas, for many years before he began photographing Cypress Creek in 1988. Since 1988, this Dallas based photographer has returned to Wimberley several times each year to photograph the creek, getting to know it intimately. Gibson has a gift for capturing subtleties of light in his lens and he has the darkroom expertise to transfer those subtleties to the print. His background as a theatrical lighting designer helped sensitize his eyes to the infinite variations in light, fog, and mist that occur over the course of a morning and throughout the seasons. For example, he captures ethereal mist rising from a warm creek on a cool morning; sunrays filtering through the foggy mist and cypress trees that grow along the creek; the intricate patterns of tree branches and trunks caught in light and shadow. This exhibition includes selenium toned gelatin silver prints and archival pigment prints that were made between 1991 and 2008. This is the first retrospective exhibition of his photographs of Cypress Creek at Valley House Gallery.
