These high-energy dance classes to live drumming explore a variety of traditional African movements and rhythms from Guinea to Zimbabwe. Learn the history of these dances practiced historically in villages, then brought to America through professional ballet companies. Dances are often used to celebrate the great markers of life such births, deaths, weddings, plantings, harvests, hunting and fishing.

Jen Robinson has been a member of the local drum and dance performance ensemble Cuero e Cuero / Ballet Fote Kan since 2003. She has migrated for years to the quientessential African dance camps in the Four Corners region including Camp Mabina, Bantu Camp and Camp Merveilles. Jen has studied with master teachers such as Guinea dancers Fara Tolno, Youssouf Koumbassa, Moustapha Bangoura, and Zimbabwe dancer Rujeko Dumbutshena, in addition to studying and performing with Heather Kratz, a dedicated student of Moustapha's. She continues her exploration of African rhythms in djembe, dundun and marimba. Live drumming on djembe, dunun, sangban and kenkeni will be performed by Shane Whitener, Mike Behrendt, Chip Wiegand, and Geoff Oros.

All levels are welcome.
