Currents: Latifa Echakhch at Columbus Museum of Art

Cost: FREE - $10.00
Presented by Columbus Museum of Art

Friday, January 13, 2012 - Sunday, April 1, 2012 In 2012, CMA will continue our Currents series of exhibitions with a project by Moroccan-born artist Latifa Echakhch. Currents: Latifa Echakhch takes its cue from CMA's Philip J. and Suzanne Schiller Collection of American Social Commentary Art, 1930 - 1970, one of the most important collections of its kind in the country. The socially charged works of the Schiller Collection address every major socio-political issue of the 20th century, including the experiences of African American, women and Eastern European artists. Echakhch continues this political dialogue in her own work, analyzing the socio-political implications of globalization, questioning, from the viewpoint of her own experience, preconceived ideas about religion, politics and national symbols. She uses everyday objects with strong cultural and symbolic value that, taken from their normal context, acquire a new meaning and give rise to a new reading of the social codes and stereotypes they hide.
The Currents series is supported by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.
