Build a movement based on love, taking actions in hope that someday peace may finally be achieved...Freedom is something we can create everyday; it is up to us to make it happen." - From the punk zine Profane Existence (June 1990) As a practice, Punk Rock Yoga is much more than vinyasa flow to the music of the punk subculture (though music clearly plays an important role); it is a way of approaching the mat with spirit of inclusion, openness, diversity, and fun. Punk is founded on the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, where people create music, culture, and-in our case, yoga-on their own terms. The Studio's Punk Rock Yoga class is a mixed level vinyasa flow; it is open to yogis with varied abilities, body types, and life experiences. In many ways, punk-with its history of finding beauty in ugliness, and appreciation of darkness and urban decay-reflects the ways in which practitioners of Tantric yoga understand reality. Tantrics see the world as an indivisible whole that encompasses all worldly experiences. There are no simple dualities like black and white, beauty and ugliness, right and wrong, male and female, only the acceptance of the nuances, differences, and complexities of reality and identity as part of one universe. Punk Rock Yoga is about celebrating all of the ways in which the asanas are articulated on diverse bodies and the breath is felt through different life experiences. Yoga is the ultimate punk rock endeavor; as yogi and documentary filmmaker John Philip says, "You don't need anything to do yoga-you don't even need shoes."
