This presentation explores the impact of global inequalities on diasporic groups that "return" to their ancestral homelands by comparing the experiences of Japanese Americans with Japanese Brazilians in Japan. Although both groups have the same ethnic ancestry as part of the "Japanese diaspora" in the Americas, their experiences in their ethnic homeland of Japan diverge dramatically because of the very different global positions of their respective origin countries.
