Description
If at first you don't succeed.... We will be heading to the heart of the Bluegrass for a different sort of hike. Perryville, Kentucky, located southwest of Lexington, was the scene of the largest Civil War battle in the Bluegrass State, and has approximately ten miles of interpretive trails that we can enjoy (we will do at least seven miles but I really want to do all ten). The terrain consists of open, rolling hills, with no single elevation change greater than 85 feet, but with enough ups and downs to get a nice workout. This is a wonderful site to hike/walk, and I will be happy to share tidbits about the battle along the way (Perryville is a bit of a personal interest of mine). There is a museum and gift shop on site as well as modern restrooms. The museum does charge a small entry fee of $2.00. I have decided to limit this event to 30 people, simply because if more than 30 of us go to the restaurant we might cause a problem! Also, no maybes RSVPs on this. Limiting the number means I am looking for folks who are truly interest in going, and giving the Maybe option keeps that from happening. Carpool: We will be leaving the Bigg's parking lot off the Turfway Road (I-75 Exit 182) at 7:30am, so be there at least a few minutes before to coordinate ride sharing (park behind the Burger King). From Bigg's we will be taking I-75 south to I-64, I-64 west to US 127, US 127 south to Harrodsburg, then US 68 southwest to Perryville. It will take a solid two hours to reach the battlefield. The address for the Bigg's is 4874 Houston Road. Here is a map. Dining - Reno's Roadhouse in Danville will be our place of choice. It is about 10 miles from the battlefield. This will be an ALL DAY event! With driving time, tour time, and dining time, do not expect to be back until early evening. Rules: 1. Boots - not needed, but wear shoes that are comfortable and sturdy. 2. Water - yes, bring some, actually bring a lot as we will be on the battlefield for several hours. 3. Smoking - Don't even think about it. First time I led a Tri-State hike to Perryville I heard someone was smoking and throwing their butts on the ground. This is a battlefield, where men fought, bled, and died. Therefore, no smoking on this hike. 4. Canines are definitely allowed, but keep them on a leash. 5. Snacks - Bring something to munch on during the hike. 6. Be on time - We will leave at 7:30 sharp; failing to be on time means being left behind. My cell - 513.600.4719
