I don't know about you ladies, but in the 70's roller skating was my LIFE! I had the satin jacket with the sparkly skate on the back and wore my dittos with pride! I could shoot the duck and skate backwards just as well as forwards. You can image my euphoria with the recent renewed popularity of Women's Roller Derby. Being of sound mind and body, I have surmised that my best place to participate is as a referee - not a Derby Queen. Derby matches are great fun! Even though these ladies are serious about the sport it is all played with a good sense of humor. Wait til you see the names and outfits! They are in need of volunteer referees and are offering free training. Here is what they have to say: Hi, As a league, we are preparing for our first home season, we spent the last year on the road and refs have been a huge issue in each of the games. During a single game, the maximum amount of skating refs necessary is 7 and as few as 4. So really, the more we have the more smooth it usually is. Not all referees have to be on skates, there are some positions that do not require skates. However, if you are interested in skating then we will train you in skating and in being a ref. Just like every other sport, there are rules and hand signals and crazy athletes that will get upset and may yell at you. But, when the athletes yell it is just because we are SO PASSIONATE about this sport, but, I promise we will not hold any call you make against you. Our normal practice schedule is Monday and Thursday from 6-8pm and Sunday11am-1230pm. You do not have to pay for practices and training, one of the perks to becoming a ref! When you come to practice please ask for Brett, Lady Diesel, or Rumble Pie. Some websites to check out.... www.sandiegorollerderby.com www.wftda.com look at the rules and ref sections.... if you can print out the rules that would be a great start to learning about the game. Also, the appendix sections have specific ref information. We look forward to you joining our program. Please contact me if you have any further questions. Thanks, Lady Diesel San Diego Roller Derby More details here. I will call and verify the next practice dates between now and Jan.1. If you are not sure about participating then just come and observe the first time. The practices are a great workout and I am going to be going twice a week as part of my Mud Run training. Come on ladies - I haven't been skating in 20 years but I can't let this pass me up!
