When our constitution was drafted, there were no income taxes. The government did not have their hands deep in our pockets, and there were no massive social programs. Pork spending was non-existent. Look where we are today. Things have changed drastically, and the new reality requires an extreme solution. I believe that if only American citizens that actually pay taxes were able to vote that responsible leadership, laws and policies would result. In other words, if a citizen is not paying taxes or they are receiving more government benefits than they are paying such that their sum cashflow is a not positive amount that benefits the country, they should not be granted the right to vote. Military service and other forms of service or contribution could also be considered for earning a voting right. A citizen that burdens the country and who still has the power to influence it's leadership and direction creates a conflict of interest. This is similar to non-stock holders choosing its directors and voting on the direction that a company goes. If somone doesn't have a vested interest at risk, what motivates them to make the best decisions for that company? Isn't it obvious that they be likely to make decisions that are not in the company's best interest if they could benefit from those decisions even if the stockholders or company suffer as a result? A company could never survive if everyone (even competitors) were able to choose it's direction. It is crazy that we expect our country to succeed under those exact same conditions.
