In the 1920s New York City became the most populous and industrially advanced city in the world. Contemporary photographers, such as Robert Frank, Helen Levitt, and Paul Strand, captured this dynamic moment and successive decades of a city in transition through still images and film focused on everyday scenes, with particular focus on life in working-class neighborhoods. The work of these and other artists are featured in the exhibition, Film and Photo in New York. Participants in this Saturday workshop will tour the exhibition and explore curricular strategies for using street photography and film as complex informational texts, supporting investigations of themes such as urban life and industrialization and making links to Common Core reading and writing standards.
