Bob Burdette: New Work at Ann Nathan Gallery

Juan Carlos Macias
Opening: Friday, November 21, 5-8pm
Continues until January
Bob Burdette fills his work with childhood memories of larger-than-life comic heroes and pulp fiction in a new series at Ann Nathan Gallery.
Burdette sifts through images and text seeking to find patterns in pop culture ephemera:
Instead of writing, I am painting, working with design, composition and color. I work these elements together and against each other in multiple layers that cloud and cover one another. This mixed-up and confused state is the way I feel the messages that were once so clear are often tainted by time, memory, and each other. -Bob Burdette
His work has expanded beyond frames to elaborately layered assemblages of wood -- jigsaw puzzle creations where magazine clippings transform into rivers and roads, and bottle caps turn into butterfly wings. Burdette collages and paints new images layer upon layer, the varying depths resembling a stack of magazines on the floor with a single narrative tying it all together.
Born in West Virginia, Burdette grew up collecting comic books and magazines -- a collection that still inspires his work today. He graduated with a BFA from the Memphis College of Art in 1997 and currently lives and works in Wichita, KS.
