In the early years of their professional development, psychotherapists struggle with how to practice in the face of uncertainty and inexperience. Theory and agency orientation offer grounding that helps to organize, understand, and initiate interventions. However, over time, practitioners develop their own belief systems or values about the therapeutic endeavor. For example, the mature therapist has the ethical responsibility to understand the nature of his or her work and to whom it is best suited.
As psychotherapists mature, we are always re-evaluating the permeability of our professional boundaries: are we more rigid or flexible than when we began our careers? This process unfolds within a developmental matrix where the psychotherapist exchanges freshness, idealism, and fearlessness for knowledge, greater self-determination, and heightened appreciation for the complex—as well as diminished energy and optimism.
