Talk about a diamond in the rough. At first glance, The Mutiny is a pretty standard dive, complete with sports-tuned TVs, a mess of bar stools and a pool table. But the hard-drinking regulars have been infiltrated by a bevy of Logan Square hipsters, who have made it their hang. The bar doesn't surprise at first glance: There are a handful of stools, a TV tuned to sports and a pool table you can fritter away the evening on. But then quirky little wonders start making themselves known: Beyond the bar is a cavernous back room, part grotto, part opium den, manned some nights by DJs and rock and punk bands (never a cover). The coasters advertise the John Mayer Trio and the matchbooks come emblazoned with Franz Ferdinand's logo. Overhead, the ceiling tiles are painted, and if you want to be part of the artistic magic, you can take one home to decorate yourself. Feeling hardcore? Karaoke takes the stage — from 9:30 a.m. (yep, a.m.) to noon on Saturdays. And $5.75 buys you a mammoth serving of beer. Literally, the mug has to hold 36 ounces. Those with weak forearms have been warned.
