Cold War Kids
Reagan babies, missile fears, and international blues. Cold War Kids began in the Fall of '04 with jangly guitar, hand claps, and a Harmony amp in a storage room atop Mulberry Street restaurant in Fullerton, CA. For the first sessions between four friends, having instruments was not as important as heavy stomping, chanting and laughter. Clanging on heat pipes, thumping on plywood walls. Hollering into tape recorders. Slipping and swaying into alleyways and juke joints of yesteryear. Dreaming the American dust bowl and British maritime. On the roof the sound and feeling was cultivated and burned, built and hallowed out, painted and strip...More about Vic Theatre
Vic Theatre
The Vic, like the Metro or the Riviera, has the clout to attract popular musical acts in a space that maintains the intimacy that's usually trounced in arena shows. Unlike those other venues, however, the Vic is host to an event that is strictly a Chicago phenomenon: the mighty Brew-and View. But first, the Vic itself: The structure is somewhat similar to the Riviera with a big floor where fans of body-on-body action congregate (or just stand if the show is low-key) and a balcony that provides both refuge and a better view. General admission typically necessitates early arrival, should you want the coveted best seat (or plot of floor) in the house. Majestic columns border the sides and hold seats where the press and other special people sit. Drinks are of the Miller variety. All in all, the Vic is a good place to see a show. However, as entertaining as a rock concert is at the Vic, seeing a movie there is an entirely different beast. When the stage is empty, the Vic Jekyll-and-Hydes its way into the Brew-N-View, which is exactly how it sounds: a glorious excuse to get drunk and watch cult-classics and movies that have long passed first-run cinema. No matter what night you go to the Vic, you will enjoy the hell out of yourself. Phone: (773) 472-0449Post a Countdown Widget
