Description
November is National Adoption Month, and the Biracial Family Network/ Multiracial Meetup group is celebrating with a very special program featuring guest speakers from Bridge Communications. Michelle Hughes, adoption attorney, will explore many of the considerations prospective adoptive parents must ponder before starting the process. She will debunk many adoption myths of the general public, and discuss the differences in adoption in 2009 compared to 1979. This is essential to anyone thinking of becoming an adoptive parent. Then Carmen Knight and Christopher Gray, both adult adoptees, will present the changing identity of the adoptee infant to adulthood. Adoptions happen in childhood but adoptees grow up to be adults and their view of adoption, as everything else, changes and becomes more complex as they grow older. They will address the importance of ethnic/racial heritage in multicultural adoptions, including homeland tours. And they will address what adoptees hate to hear about adoption from the general public, including the media. This is an opportunity to learn how to talk about adoption in a sensitive manner that respects all parties involved. (Yes, there is a "politically correct" language for adoption-see wikipedia.com under 'adoption language') Input from adoptive & biological parents is welcome, and other adult adoptees are especially encouraged to attend and share. An audience participation discussion will follow. Don't miss this exciting and informative event! Children are welcome, as always we will have children's activities and refreshments. Following the meeting we will head over to the Native American Indian 56th Annual Powwow at UIC Pavilion 1150 W. Harrison to enjoy a native food, dancing, arts & crafts! Adults $12, kids $6. See Robin for a free child's ticket coupon with purchase of adult ticket. (312)285-7555 P.S. Mark your calendars for BFN's Annual Holiday Diversity Potluck Luncheon Dec. 5th 12p-2p, same location. We will be acknowledging and celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. There will be special children's activities and goody bags just for them! Try to bring a potluck dish that reflects your personal heritage. BFN will provide turkey & dressing and beverages.
