In 1973, Marian and her sister Dolores were arrested in England, and charged with attempting to blow up the Old Bailey courthouse; based on the word of an informant. Sentenced to life, she was imprisoned in England and brutally force-fed over 400 times during a six-month period. After severely botching one force-feeding, prison doctors called off the force-feeding. Shortly thereafter the women were transferred to Ireland to finish their sentences, and with severely deteriorating health they were released, in effect, to die.
While others who had been arrested with Marian and Dolores have gone on to high-paying jobs in provisional Sinn Fein, Marian Price has staunchly resisted the continued partition of Ireland and the British government’s administration at Stormont. While Gerry Adams and his co-horts fly to and from the US with ease, the US government has put into effect a visa ban against Marian Price’s appearance here. In January 2000, the US State Dept stopped Marian from coming to the US on the basis that she had served a sentence as a political prisoner. Responding to the denial Marian said: "The circumstances of this denial and the fact that I obtained a waiver to travel to the US several years ago proves that this action has been taken because of my opposition as an Irish Republican to the Stormont Agreement and the current partition process." The influential Irish American journal, the Irish Echo, called for a visa for her. "This newspaper has always stood for the right of people from all sides of the argument in the North to be given a hearing in the US. The case of Price is no different from that of (Gerry) Adams when he was being denied entry." The Irish Freedom Committee opposes the US State Department mindset that Irish Americans are better off kept in the dark about the real level of grassroots opposition in Ireland to the current Stormont Treaty with Britain. We oppose US government censorship of ideas that are contrary to those of the occupation of Ireland; and the denial of our rights to hear other perspectives on the conflict. We demand the right for a visa to the US for Marian Price, and our constitutionally-guaranteed right to hear what she has to say.
