Description
Chautauqua Institution is situated in a Victorian lakeside village that hosts a Summer program of arts, education and recreation in an ecumenical environment. Gingerbread-style cottages and charming gardens create a living quilt of yesteryear small-town America. Route follows winding walkways. After the walk, enjoy a meal and rock in a rocking chair overlooking beautiful Lake Chautauqua on the veranda of the 19th century Inn. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave his famous "I Hate War" speech at Chautauqua on August 14, 1936. The Chautauqua Institution is a National Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a National Historic Landmark June 30, 1989.
