Good Afternoon, Cheba and I are eager to get out for a long New Year's weekend in the woods. The plan is to meet up sometime on New Year's morning (not too early though) and drive out to some mountains. I am keeping the plans a little vague at the moment, because it will all depend on snowfall. Right now, I have three options in mind, all of which will most likely involve snowshoeing/skiing/hiking backpacking in the mountains of the Virginias. This is NOT an advanced trip. Although the conditions will be tough, we are not racing and will likely spend a great deal of time just enjoying the winter solitude. - Take the Tiberline Ski Area ski lift up to the Dolly Sods and spend ~2 nights camping, skiing, snowshoeing or hiking on that high and beautiful plateau. We can rent skis/snowshoes at White Grass for cheap. - Drive down to Mt. Rogers in far southwestern Virginia to ski, snowshoe, camp and hike up to and around Virginia's highest peak for ~2 nights. We could rent skis and snowshoes locally or borrow from friends. - Head out to Cranberry Wilderness in West Virginia. This awesome area is someplace I have been meaning to get back to for sometime and has some of the most beautiful high-altitude forests of the Virginias. Again, would be for about 2 nights and we'd have to see about renting skis/snowshoes locally. When signing up for this adventure, please indicate to me if you have a preference for the location/sport (i.e. skiing/snowshoeing etc). As the date gets closer and we have a better idea what the snow conditions are we'll make more definitive plans, but please let me know if you are interested now. If there is no interest than I will cancel the trip. peace Jon and Cheba
