The Expanding Eye: Art Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe at University of Virginia

Date/s: September 12, 2009 - January 3, 2010 Every: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays Time: 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Poe was a member of the first class of Jeffersons University & although Poes fantastic tendencies seem opposed to Jeffersonian rationalism, both men shared an interest in architecture, languages, technology, exploration & invention. The Expanding Eye emphasizes the fact that Poes legacy is both artistic & literary. From Redons presentation of the eye as a hot air balloon to Nathan Oliveiras monumental series of black & white lithographs visualizing Poes story of A Descent into the Maelstrom, these works encourage the eye & the mind to expand and experience the seemingly endless dimensions of Poes imagination.

Curated by Stephen Margulies, volunteer curator & Margie Balge-Crozier, interim academic curator.
