In the 1890s, New Englander Margaret Morley visited western North Carolinaâs mountains and fell in love with the land and its people. The visit so inspired her that she moved to Tryon, south of Asheville, by the end of the decade. The well-known biologist, writer, illustrator, and educator spent the next twelve years exploring the region and recording scenes of everyday life in captivating photographs and delightful prose.
Her resulting book, The Carolina Mountains, was an immediate success and is still considered one of the best books about the region. Transformed into a traveling exhibit, Morleyâs words and images provide an intimate look at a way of life that has vanished in the high country. The exhibit features more than fifty prints made from photographs in this collection, and will also include additions from the museumâs own collection.
Associated programming for the exhibit will begin in the fall of 2009. Designed to enhance and expand our current Living History Sunday series, the programs will take place the first Sundays of October, November, and December, and will address and connect visitors to the themes of foodways, textiles, and photography that are found throughout the exhibit.
