Description
Phone: 843-722-2996
Web Site: http://www.charlestonmuseum.org
The Charleston Museum is continuing its Around the World exhibition series for children with three new exhibits for 2009.
Around the World aims to introduce children to items that are a part of everyday life for children from other parts of the world and is displayed in Kidstory, the Museums interactive childrens exhibit. For 2009, the focus will be on Africa, European folklore and Native American artistry. The Museums education department will offer special family programming throughout the year.
Adventures in Africa
January 8 - May 3, 2009
The continent of Africa is as varied as it is large. Around the World: Adventures in Africa will look at this massive continent through artifacts collected from Angola to Zaire, from musical instruments to basketry. There will be an antelope horn trumpet and coconut shell marimbas, a colorful coiled basket from Somalia, a wood and hide drum from Zaire, and milk gourds from Kenya. Even some wild animal mounts and skeletons will make an appearance. Children can create their own music with an interactive station featuring an African drum and gourd rattles.
In conjunction with Around the World: Adventures in Africa, the Charleston Museum will offer an African drumming workshop, special Kid Tours and an animated feature movie. Please visit the calendar of events at www.charlestonmuseum.org for details.
May 5 - August 30, 2009
Native American Artistry
September 1 - December 31, 2009
Kidstory is a hands-on, educational exhibit that teaches children of all ages the rich history of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Interactive components and wall-
length murals of the Museums Dill Sanctuary and Heyward-Washington House, as well as other notable Charleston scenes, captivate children and promises to spark their love of
history for many years to come. Admission to Kidstory is included with general Museum admission (free for members; $10 for adults, $5 for children 3-12, under 3 free).
