Book Review @ New Cumberland Public Library at Cumberland County Library System

Seven Pennsylvania counties and seventy libraries in those counties made “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett the One Book One Community Selection for 2011. Mrs. D.J. Landis will review that selection in Foundation Hall of the New Cumberland Public Library on Tuesday, October 11 at 10:30 AM.
Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, later graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in English and Creative Writing. She moved to New York City and worked in magazine publishing and marketing for nine years then returned south to reside in Altanta, Georgia in 2001.
“The Help” was released in 2009 and immediately shot up the best seller lists and sold 5 million copies by August 2011. Stockett’s novel is about African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s. Reflective of her first novel, Kathryn was raised by an African American domestic worker in lieu of an absentee mother.
Mrs. D.J. Landis, Mayor of New Cumberland Borough, will review this “…startling, resonant portrait of the intertwined lives of women on opposite sides of the racial divide”. Mrs. Landis is a graduate of Millersville University, current President of New Cumberland Olde Towne Association, and extremely active in many other community organizations and events.
Library Book Reviews are held on the second Tuesday of each month from September through May. Further information is available by calling the main circulation desk at 774-7820.
