Film â" The Manitouâs Shoe: Satirizing (Mis)Perceptions of the American Indian

This presentation features a German production of a contemporary western farce (Der Schuh Des Manitu). The movie satirizes common Euro-American clichés about American Indians and the American frontier, inviting the audience to examine them. Irrespective of the reality of Native American cultures and life-ways (past and present), the movie illustrates the power and persistence of Euro-American constructions of what an âIndianâ is âsupposedâ to be. A brief lecture is followed by a full feature film presentation (dubbed in English) with a discussion after the film.*
