Description
Twenty year old Elizabeth Bennet, is the second eldest of the five daughters of a relatively poor country gentleman in the fictional estate of Longbourn, Hertfordshire, England. Her father's estate is entailed to Mr. Collins, the closest male relative, meaning that upon Mr. Bennet's death, she and her mother and sisters will be turned out of their house and left to fend for themselves, something which obsesses her mother. Elizabeth's older sister, Jane, is sweet-tempered and intelligent, but her three younger sisters are relatively uneducated. Thus forms the background of one of Jane Austen's most beloved novels and one of the most famous novels of all times. This event is for all you Austen fanactics and those who have never read anything by Jane Austen but have always wanted to. Because part of this event will be watching the BBC miniseries version of Pride & Prejudice, I am splitting this into two events. (There aren't too many times I've been able to watch the entire 5 and a half hours in one go.) So, look for part 1 of this event as well. However, don't feel that you can only RSVP yes if you can attend both halves. Even if you can only do one part, you are welcome to come! We will start with a potluck dinner at 6pm where we will have a discussion about the book. After dinner, we will watch the last scene of the first DVD and the entire second DVD. Following the DVD, we will share dessert while discussing the film adaptation that has been called a "splendid adaptation, with a remarkably faithful and sensitively nuanced script." For the final part of this event, we will be reading chapters 34 - 61. (Of course, themes that encompass the entire book are welcome for the second event.)
