REACH: The Architecture of Freelon

The Freelon Group, Architects is a fifty-five person design firm founded in 1990 by Philip Freelon (MArch, '77). Located in Durham, North Carolina, the Freelon Group specializes in the design of museums and cultural centers, and educational and research facilities. Their projects have included the National Center for Civil & Human Rights in Atlanta, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore, and the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. The firm is distinguished not only through achievements in design but also by its inclusion of women and minorities traditionally underrepresented in the architecture profession.
Philip Freelon leads the team of Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup on the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. In December 2011 he was appointed by President Barack Obama to the seven-member U.S. Commission on Fine Arts. He is a Professor of Practice in the MIT Department of Architecture.
The ten projects featured in this exhibition exemplify the reach of the Freelon Group's work. Each is introduced with a simple massing model or parti that establishes the seminal idea for the building, and further design development is documented by drawings, models and photographs leading up to the completed project.
