PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE TO NOVEMBER 17TH. OK, I'm biased. This is my all-time favorite movie. However, I'm not alone. This classic, quirky noir film is full of delightful surprises, including an ironic, upbeat musical score. Film Lounge drop in guest Brian Bartky loves it too. He loves it so much he's going to put aside his aversion to public speaking and present this dazzling film on November 17th. SYNOPSIS: An out of work pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, arrives in a post war Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious allies, and where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an ex-school friend, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, only to discover that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to Harry Lime. AESTHETIC: The atmospheric use of black and white expressionist cinematography (by Robert Krasker), with harsh lighting and distorted camera angles, is a key feature of The Third Man. Combined with the unique theme music, seedy locations, and acclaimed performances from the cast, the style evokes the atmosphere of an exhausted, cynical post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War. STARS: Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles, Alida Valli and Trevor Howard. Directed by Carol Reed ("Oliver!") and based on a story by Graham Greene. Get a taste! Watch the trailer here: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2214265113/ Come and savor this film the European way, with a glass of wine. Afterward we'll discuss the film noir genre and how 'The Third Man' pushes that envelope into avant-garde territory. Fans of the Coen brothers will recognize this film as a source of inspiration for the maverick filmmakers.
