Start Point Address / Driving Directions:
Parking area with restrooms and payphone at Carderock Recreation Area, Cabin John, MD. Follow signs within park. DIRECTIONS: From MD & DC: From I-495 (Cap Beltway outer loop going southwest toward VA) take Exit 41 in Maryland (Carderock, Great Falls). You will be going west on Clara Barton Pkwy. Proceed about 0.8 mile to Carderock exit on RIGHT. *Go up ramp; turn LEFT to cross over Parkway and follow signs ahead for Carderock. After driving through a short tunnel to stop sign, turn RIGHT. Then immediate LEFT into parking lot, our starting point. FROM VA: Fom I-495 (Cap Beltway inner loop going northeast toward Maryland), immediately after crossing Amer Legion Bridge (use RIGHT lane on bridge), take Exit 41 (Clara Barton Pkwy, Carderock). Use LEFT lane as exit ramp splits, to go to Clara Barton Pkwy. Proceed about 1 mile to Carderock exit on RIGHT. Continue as above *. Event Description: Trail is 10km with a 5km option. Easy out and back on towpath going upstream from Carderock to the Widewater area, to the detour on Berma Rd around - 100 ft breach in towpath, to Locks #15 & #16. Relatively flat natural surfaces. Suitable for strollers but not wheelchairs. WATER WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE EXCEPT IN THE RESTROOMS AT THE START POINT. Restrooms available only at Start/Finish Point. Participants may bring a snack & water for use on the trail. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR IVV CREDIT - Financial transactions NOT allowed on park property. Prepaid registrants who don't participate will forfeit the fee. No cash or checks will be accepted on the day of the event. We CANNOT sell record books in the park but will have insert cards. There is no reward for this event. PRE-REGISTRATION INFO: Send $3 check payable to SVSVC to: Carolyn Thurber, 17616 Mill Creek Dr, Derwood, MD 20855-1015. Write "C&O" & your phone number on the check; please mail check early enough to be received by Tues, Jan 13, 2009.
