Maine State Music Theatre Hosts Dance Workshop on Saturday, February 18th Focusing on Original Broadway Choreography
Maine State Music Theatre is hosting a Dance Workshop on Saturday, February 18th that will provide dance training related to MSMT’s upcoming 2012 season. Participants will learn part of the original choreography of the musical A CHORUS LINE and a tap combination from 42nd STREET. There is a workshop fee of $15 per person. Interested dancers should contact MSMT Company Manager, Kathi Kacinski, at (207) 725-8760 ext. 11.
The workshop will be taught by Ray Dumont, a veteran MSMT performer, director and choreographer, and former MSMT Managing Director. Dumont learned the original choreography of A CHORUS LINE from Mitzi Hamilton who played the role of Val in the original London Company and on Broadway. Legendary choreographer, Michael Bennett, who developed the musical A CHORUS LINE used Hamilton as his inspiration for Val while creating the show. Dumont also has extensive tap experience and often serves as MSMT’s choreographer during auditions for the summer shows.
The February 18th workshop is suited for intermediate to advanced high school and college-aged dancers. During the workshop, participants will be given an insight into the dance demands of MSMT’s upcoming season, which includes A CHORUS LINE and 42nd STREET, as well as LEGALLY BLONDE and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s SUNSET BOULEVARD. The workshop is a part of MSMT’s continuing effort to introduce up and coming performers to the world of professional theatre and the specific styles of dance inherent to musical theatre.
“I regularly work with talented young people in Maine who have a sincere interest in musical theatre,” states Dumont. “Giving them this opportunity to learn and appreciate original Broadway choreography is exciting and unique and I cannot wait to teach them something that is so close to my own heart.”
Workshop participants will also get advanced training in the dance combinations that MSMT will utilize during their local auditions being held the following weekend, February 25th starting at 10:00 a.m. at the MSMT Administration building on Elm Street in Brunswick. Questions about the Dance Workshop and MSMT’s local auditions can be emailed to jobs@msmt.org, also visit the MSMT website at www.msmt.org for information about audition requirements.
