Happy Lives

In Happy Lives, everything is backwards and bent. Guitar riffs and back-up vocals played by a midi-keyboard, live drums performing duets with drum machines, and a frontman functioning as both lead singer and soundguy. Its as familiar as it is fresh, as plain as it is riveting, and everything in between. "We never want to be static," says lead singer Mike Lande. "We want you to move." Happy Lives explores the space between a DJ and a rock band, drawing from the likes of The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, and The Beatles. Convinced that acoustic drums and live vocal harmonies are the most compelling parts of both a song's composition and live performance, Happy Lives never hesitates to replace a bass-line or guitar riff with a digital button, especially if it means more space on stage and less gear to pack. "Pop music has always been mechanic," says Lande. "It's a series of riffs and beats and hooks that repeat in varying orders. We use our machines--samplers, keyboards, digital drums--to help the audience and ourselves and the songs become more self-aware. It's not Van Halen."
