Stephen Hamilton directs this recreation of a reading of Charles Dickens' two lesser known stories that were first presented in Steinway Hall in New York City and in Albany in 1868.

This is one of four performances that explore the tradition of touring European performers who made their mark on the American public, following the Hudson River as a highway through New York State. Concert halls in river towns appeared as signs of civic pride and American sophistication through the late 19th century, welcoming artists like Fritz Kreisler, Jascha Heifitz, Pablo Casals, Ignacy Paderewski, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sarah Bernhardt, Charles Dickens and William Thackeray, many of them giving their American debuts along the Hudson.

  • Directions: #1 subway train to West 242nd Street #1 Station. A free Wave Hill van meets visitors at the terminus hourly while returning visitors departing the gardens. Passenger pick-up and drop-off are on the west side of Broadway directly in front of Burger King. Shuttle schedules at www.wavehill.org
