Rich Curtis

There are few underground Australian DJ/producers with as good an ear for 'big tunes' as Rich Curtis. An honours graduate from the university of epic progressive house as taught by Professors Sasha, Digweed and Cattaneo, Rich has become one of the Queensland capital's most valuable closing slamfest DJs with a relentless approach to his DJ sets; sets built on a foundation of chugging bottom end and rolling percussion but with enough sprinklings of melody to keep music fans shoulder to shoulder with dance floor junkies in front of him whenever he plays.

It's Rich's discipline as a musician which has set him apart from the growing band of aspiring jocks in Australia through the mid to late noughties. Where many DJs - established, aspiring or otherwise - struggle to piece together one promo mix a year, you can set your watch to Rich turning in two quality mixes every month - always fresh, always epic, and always staying faithful to his sound, which sits at the big room end of progressive and tech house.

Schooled in the art of keyboard, trumpet, guitar and drums, it's hardly surprising that Rich has an affinity with the more musical end of house music. He continues to draw inspiration from the progressive scene's 1990s godfathers, with his endlessly rolling style and music collection very much reminiscent of John Digweed in full flight. So it's appropriate that he's played a pivotal role in bringing some of the other progressive masters to Brisbane, hosting Anthony Pappa on four separate occasions in the last four years (playing back to back with the man in 2009!) and also providing a leading hand in getting Hernan Cattaneo to Brisbane for the first time ever in 2009, then again for Ulterior in 2010.

Since 2007 he's been racking up the quality support slots across the south-east corner of Queensland, playing alongside Pappa, Hernan Cattaneo, Charlie May, Jim Rivers, Reset Robot (Dave Robertson), Henry Saiz, Hybrid, Kosmas Epsilon, Marc Marzenit, Slam, Fergie, Danny Bonnici, Nathan Fake, Chris Fortier, Lee Burridge, Simon Baker, Vince Watson, Peter Horrevorts, Timo Maas, Desyn Masiello, PQM, Phil K, Ricky Ryan, Matt Rowan & Jaytech, Mind Electric, Chymera, Mark Dynamix, Sasha Le Monnier and Guy J among others. In 2010 Rich also made his debut Festival appearance at Future Music Festival, bringing his brand of underground big room tech-prog to the masses!

In mid-2010 Rich turned his attention to production and in the space of 3 weeks churned out his first batch of underground prog-tech/tech-house tunes, several of which caught the ear of Replug Records' label boss Cid Inc (ex Mashtronic) who has continued to sign and remix some of Rich's productions through 2011. Combine his increasingly busy DJ/production schedule with a monthly show "Resolutions" on xelestia.com and guest appearances on JJJ and 4ZzZ radio and you get to understand why Rich Curtis has become such a valuable player on this local scene. His lifelong mission to bring the music is bearing fruit, and his studies at the school of prog are all but complete.

Angus Gibbins

Trance fans are a notoriously passionate bunch, but it’s hard to imagine a more passionate trance fanatic than Angus Gibbins. And with his upbringing it’s hardly surprising that he eats, breathes and sleeps hands-in-the-air synth melodies – while most children of the 90s would have been chuffed if their parents were cool enough to be into Hendrix, Zeppelin and Floyd, Angus’ father brought him up on a steady diet of Sasha, Digweed and Global Underground compilations. It’s little wonder that once he was old enough to rebel against trumpet and French horn lessons at high school he invested in turntables and developed a nasty vinyl addiction.

It was the pure emotion of trance that captured Angus in those early days of dance music love, and it’s an obsession which drives him to this day – he’s widely considered the most knowledgeable trance DJ in his home town of Brisbane, renowned for his uncanny ability to trainspot a trance anthem from 20 paces. This knowledge also serves him well behind the decks, with his versatility one of his most valuable assets. Deep and melodic progressive, uplifting reach-for-the-lasers specials or dark, dirty and driving tech monsters – Angus’ ability to progress through these sounds over the course of a set have seen him slowly but surely progress through the ranks of Brisbane DJs since relocating there from the Sunshine Coast in 2005.

With regular appearances in the lineup at Family Nightclub ‘s “Fridays @ Family” – the Brisbane superclub’s flagship event –he has established himself as a staple booking for Brisbane’s club, rave and festival scene. He’s rocked events such as Creamfields, Gatecrasher, Transmission, Q-Dance and Liberate, sharing the stage with big names including ATB, Robert Nickson, Nick Sentience, 4Strings, Ashley Wallbridge, Filo & Peri & Marco V. Guest mixes featured on Sense.FM and Solarstone’s Solaris International podcast have kept Angus busy and with his new monthly radio show having launched in 2010 on Afterhours.FM, there's no slowing down for this talented DJ.

Angus’ crowning achievement to date is his stellar afternoon slot at Brisbane’s inaugural Global Gathering festival. “Angus Gibbins looks like he's having more fun than the entire dance floor gathered in front of him on the Godskitchen stage combined, and that's some achievement given the love being sent back in his direction,” said Time Off magazine of a set which was considered to be one of the finest of the festival, local or international.

It seems nearly a decade of passion and dedication to his music is finally paying off for Angus Gibbins, and fans should expect to see him waving the flag for his beloved trance far beyond the dance floors of Brisbane.

Dan Burke

Starting his DJ career from humble beginnings of house parties, to playing festivals and some of Australia's biggest club nights, Dan Burke has done most of it. Whilst working as a sound & lighting tech, and attending university, Dan still manages to squeeze in enough time to run one of the most popular trance and progressive club nights in Qld. Having billed alongside acts like Scooter, Joey Riot, C.O.A in his early years of rave parties, Dan quickly grew to support slots for the like of David Forbes & Mallorcalee, gaining DJ slots at The Met, Planet Nightclub, Barsoma, Mass, Kink, Winter Sound System, and Electric Playground just to name a few.

With an undying passion for trance, Dan could see that the Brisbane scene was missing out on some of the amazing acts that tour, but bypass Brisbane, not to mention some of the amazing undiscovered talent that existed in our city. Dan then created his events company Lemon & Lime and has since been responsible for touring many trance acts throughout Australia.

Dan’s talent speaks for itself, having played alongside such artists as Eddie Halliwell, Dash Berlin, Sean Tyas, Agnelli & Nelson, Matt Hardwick, Jaytech, Marlo, John 00 Fleming, M.I.K.E, Marcel Woods, Wippenberg, Andy Moor, John O'Callaghan, Jerome Isma-Ae, and Dave Seaman, he has received nothing but praise for his skills behind the decks and the quality of his sets.
