On Saturday September 11, we will be screening at the Eliot Burying Ground/Eustis Street Firehouse, Roxbury, Mass (not digging!) in order to recover archaeological materials disturbed during archaeology work conducted in December. The City Archaeology Program is assisting Historic Boston Incorporated (HBI) in advance of the reconditioning of the old firehouse and new construction on the property. Where: Eliot Burying Ground/Eustis Street Fire House. 16 Eustis Street (corner Eustis and Washington Streets) Roxbury Closest Transportation: Dudley Station (bus); Silverline (bus stops at site); and on-street parking available. It's approximately 4 blocks from Ruggles Orange Line stop. Time: 10AM--3PM. What you bring: Water, sunscreen, hat, durable boots or shoes or sneakers, comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty. What we provide: Equipment, training and guidance in recovering material culture. Come for an hour or two, or the whole day. We will not screen in rainy conditions No need to RSVP! Just show up! You will have plenty of time to explore the burying ground and take pictures. The burying ground is one of many owned and managed by the City of Boston, Parks and Recreation Department, Historic Burying Grounds Initiative.
